Parenting Coordinator in Wilmington

Board-Certified Family Law Specialists Serving New Hanover County

When a custody order is in place but co-parenting remains a source of ongoing conflict, a parenting coordinator can bridge the gap between what the order says and how daily life actually works. Fresh Start Family Law serves Wilmington and New Hanover County families from our local office, with a team that includes Certified Family Financial and Superior Court Mediators and experienced Parent Coordinators who understand how these appointments function inside the family courts.

If you’re dealing with a high-conflict custody situation in the Wilmington area, our team can help you understand your options. Call us at (919) 849-5744 to schedule a confidential consultation by phone, video, or in person.

What a Parenting Coordinator Does Under North Carolina Law

A parenting coordinator is a neutral third party appointed to help parents in high-conflict custody situations comply with an existing custody order. Rather than relitigating disputes in court, the parenting coordinator works to implement the order and resolve ambiguities that arise in day-to-day co-parenting. The role is governed by N.C. Gen. Stat. Chapter 50, Article 5 (Sections 50-90 through 50-100).

A parenting coordinator’s authority is limited to matters that aid compliance with the custody order or address terms that are ambiguous, conflicting, or simply not covered. Categories that typically fall within that scope include:

  • Transition times and pickup and delivery logistics
  • Vacation and holiday scheduling
  • Transportation to visitation
  • Child care and extracurricular activities
  • Discipline and health care management
  • Telephone contact with the child

Written decisions issued by the parenting coordinator carry the weight of a court order and remain enforceable even after the coordinator’s appointment ends, unless modified by a subsequent coordinator or the court.

When a North Carolina Court Appoints a Parenting Coordinator

A parenting coordinator can be appointed by agreement of both parties, on the motion of one parent, or by the court on its own initiative, at any point after a permanent or temporary custody order is entered. The appointment can’t be made in connection with an emergency-only order.

When parties haven’t agreed to the appointment, the court must find three things before moving forward: the case qualifies as high-conflict, the appointment serves the best interests of the child, and both parties can pay for the coordinator’s services. North Carolina law defines a high-conflict case by an ongoing pattern of excessive litigation, anger and distrust, verbal abuse, physical aggression or threats, or difficulty communicating about and cooperating in the care of the children.

A parenting coordinator doesn’t replace an attorney or substitute for an underlying custody and child support order. The role is a tool for implementation, not a pathway around the court process.

North Carolina’s Qualifications for Parenting Coordinators

Not everyone can serve as a parenting coordinator in North Carolina. The statute requires a master’s or doctoral degree in psychology, law, social work, or counseling, along with at least five years of post-degree professional experience in a relevant area and a current North Carolina license in their field. Ongoing training and continuing education are required to maintain eligibility.

These requirements ensure that anyone appointed to this role brings both professional grounding and direct experience with family dynamics, child development, or legal process. When you work with Fresh Start Family Law, you have access to team members who meet these standards and who understand how parenting coordination intersects with the legal obligations in your custody order.

How Fresh Start Family Law Supports Parenting Coordination Matters

Our attorneys are Certified Family Financial Mediators and Certified Superior Court Mediators, and our team includes experienced Parent Coordinators with direct insight into how custody orders get interpreted and carried out after a court proceeding ends. That perspective matters. An order that looks clear on paper can generate real disputes once family routines, school schedules, and life circumstances shift.

Our team also includes a former North Carolina Supreme Court law clerk, which sharpens how we read and apply the statutes and case law governing your situation. When conflict between co-parents runs deeper than scheduling disagreements, we can connect clients with family counselors and financial advisors through our referral network, addressing the broader pressures that often fuel custody disputes.

Our approach treats the legal process as a foundation for moving forward, not a vehicle for escalation. Whether you need representation in a parenting coordination proceeding or guidance on whether a PC appointment fits your situation, we work toward outcomes that support your children’s stability.

Local Knowledge for New Hanover County’s Family Court

New Hanover County is part of North Carolina’s Fifth Judicial District, which maintains its own local rules for Family Court and Domestic Court proceedings. Familiarity with those rules, including the county’s mandatory mediation requirements, shapes how we approach custody matters we handle here.

Both of our founding attorneys are recognized by the North Carolina State Bar as Board Certified Specialists in Family Law, the highest credential the Bar confers in this field. Together, they bring over 30 years of experience to family law matters across coastal North Carolina. We pursue negotiated and collaborative resolutions wherever possible and maintain full courtroom experience for cases that require it. Our office environment reflects those same values, including the presence of a dedicated emotional support dog for clients who need it.
